Master in Marine Sciences

This project, carried out as part of the OPB201 (At-Sea Measurements) course within the Master 1 in Marine Sciences program at Aix-Marseille University, focuses on the PHYBIO 2026 oceanographic cruise conducted aboard the research vessel Téthys II.

This scientific mission, operated by Ifremer and crewed by GENAVIR, aimed to characterize the physicochemical properties of water masses offshore Marseille. The study centered on three areas of interest: the Cassis canyon, a transect crossing the Northern Current, and the Cortiou outfall to investigate its discharge plume.

The project is structured around the following axes of analysis:

• Sampling strategy: Coupling discrete measurements (CTD rosette, Niskin bottles) with continuous acquisitions (MVP, ADCP, thermosalinograph).
• Dynamic characterization: Identification of water masses and analysis of vertical concentration gradients.
• Biogeochemical monitoring: Analysis of nutrient and oxygen concentrations to support a long-term monitoring database.
